Roofing Elements
  • Ridge Cap — A ridge cap is the horizontal external angle formed by the intersection of two sloping roof planes. The ridge is also referred to as the trim piece that covers the roof peak. The picture above shows 3 distinct ridge caps.

  • Valley — A valley is the internal angle formed where two intersecting sloping roofs meet. The purpose of the valley trim is to provide a means for water runoff. Some homes may have numerous valleys contained in the roof design while other roof designs have no valleys.

  • Endwall Flashing — An endwall flashing is the trim piece that provides rain protection where an end wall meets the sidewall of the home. A home may require several endwall flashings, depending on roofing design.

  • Gable Trim — A gable is formed where the sidewall of the home meets with two sloping roof lines to form the upper point of a triangle.  The flashing that covers the edge of the roof/sidewall is called gable flashing or gable trim.  Homes may have more than one gable and some designs have identical gables on each end of the home.

  • Sidewall Flashing — A sidewall flashing is used whenever a sloping roof adjoins the home sidewall.  The purpose of this flashing is to keep rain from penetrating under the metal roofing at this junction.

  • Transition Flashing — A transition flashing is used at the intersection of two sloping roof areas that have different pitches or slopes.  The purpose of this transition is to prevent water from leaking into this area of the roof system.  Your roofing system may require numerous transition flashings or none, depending on the design.

  • Drip Edge — A drip edge is a piece of trim that goes on the horizontal lower edge of a sloping roof.  This trim is also referred to as an eave trim.  The purpose of the drip edge is to shed water away from the wall of the home.
